JUNIOR TEAMS WIN FALL LEAGUE
JANUARY 11, 2012
JUNIOR TEAMS WIN LEAGUE
Local Junior Team Tennis players had a busy weekend. Four of the five Laguna Beach teams finished either first or second in their league and qualified to play in the Orange County playoffs. Three of those teams
went through to the Finals. The 12 & Under Team and the 10& Under Team both won the Championship match. The 12 & Under Intermediate team followed up last seasons league and playoff wins with another playoff win, defeating a
team from Homestead Park, Irvine 6 sets to 3, 44-26 games on Saturday and a very good UCI team 6 sets to 3,
43-33 games in the Final on Sunday. Coming from behind after a catastrophic start on Saturday turned out to be crucial to their mind set on Sunday. They really left everything on the court to take the win Sunday. Playing for this team were Jett Cole, Nicholas Besso, Mason Lebby, William Michelson,
Peter Szacaks, Francis Pillsbury and Scott Yoder.
The 10 & Under Novice team, playing with the new lower compression green balls endorsed by the USTA for 10 & U play, had a phenomenal two days of competition, defeating 2 teams from Irvine they had previously been unable to defeat.
Members of this team on the weekend were Sarah MacCallum, Charlie Besso, Jai Lin Garrett, Megan Mindte, Jessa Chaney and Claire Smithers. They won Saturday's Semi-Final 8-1, 52-26 and Sunday's Final against the top team Irvine Di 1, 7 sets to 2, 48-16 games.
Winning their Semi-Final convincingly 6-3, 43-28 on Saturday against University Park, the 14 & U Novice team went in to the Final one player short which automatically cost them 12 games. In the end they lost by less than that, only 11 games short of a win: 3 sets to 6, 31 games to 41, two of those matches went to tie-break. Finalists on Sunday were, Cameron Andersen, Jaden Christiansen, Marianna Krumrine, Emma Paddon and Malia Helms.
